Waterwise Community
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waterwise Community
Take the Wyland National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation
I will discover the power of my community working together by completing the WNMC Pledge and pledging to save 1000. gallons of water.
Waterwise Beautification
Use Permeable Pavers
I will reduce polluted runoff and support groundwater recharge where possible by replacing 80 square feet of concrete with permeable surfaces.
Waterwise Beautification
Use Native Plants When Possible
I will plant 80 square feet of native species, landscape with water-efficient plants in order to reduce general water usage, and minimize fertilizer and pesticide use.
Waterwise Home
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Waterwise Beautification
Collect Rain Water
I will create 1 rain garden(s), bioswale(s), or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Waterwise Beautification
Plant a Tree
I will reduce stormwater runoff, promote better air quality, and reduce CO2 from our atmosphere by planting 6 tree(s) in my home or in my community.
Waterwise Beautification
Share Your Project On Social Media
I will share an image or video of my project on social media and tag @wylandfoundation along with a caption highlighting the benefits of eco-friendly gardening.
Waterwise Beautification
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterwise Beautification Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsDid you know that our quality of life on earth is tied to a thin layer of topsoil? Natural mulch from plant debris plays a critical role in conserving moisture, preventing erosion, storing groundwater, and helping return nutrients to the soil.
Jordan Bowen 4/06/2021 5:27 AMLaid mulch with all my new plantings including a juniper bush that sits on a mound of earth that constantly erodes onto my driveway. By planting and mulching the earth that easily erodes, I hope to reduce the erosion taking place.
